BI WORLDWIDEs WorkTango Acquisition Signals Mid Market Push

BI WORLDWIDE’s acquisition of WorkTango expands the global engagement company into the mid-market while providing a relatively rare example of a recognition technology company being purchased by a strategic industry buyer rather than another private equity investor.

The acquisition of WorkTango by BI WORLDWIDE is significant for two reasons. It gives BI WORLDWIDE a deliberate entry into the mid-market, where WorkTango has developed an established customer base, technology platform, and expertise. It also represents one of the relatively few recent recognition-industry transactions involving an operating company buying another strategic business rather than a private equity firm transferring an asset to another financial owner.

It is not literally the first such transaction. Blackhawk Network acquired employee recognition company Achievers in 2015, which later sold it to another private equity firm. Nevertheless, the BI Worldwide deal stands out in a recognition and engagement market in which several companies owned by private equity firms remain on the market and when much of the recent consolidation has been driven by private equity investment and portfolio-company combinations

BI WORLDWIDE has traditionally concentrated on large multinational and Fortune 500 organizations. WorkTango brings greater experience serving mid-sized companies through a software platform combining employee surveys and insights with recognition and rewards.

The companies say WorkTango will remain a separate BI WORLDWIDE subsidiary and retain its existing name, brand, and entire team. Its core fulfillment infrastructure will move to BI WORLDWIDE’s global rewards marketplace, giving WorkTango customers access to a broader selection of merchandise, experiences, events, and milestone awards. BI WORLDWIDE says its network currently supports millions of participants in more than 200 countries.

“With BI WORLDWIDE, we can offer our customers more choice and deeper support across rewards, recognition, and beyond,” says Monique McDonough, CEO of WorkTango. She adds that the combination gives WorkTango a clearer path for continued growth in the mid-market.

A Strategic Buyer Sees Value in Recognition Technology

The nature of the buyer may be as important to the industry as the market expansion itself. BI WORLDWIDE is not simply providing capital. It operates employee engagement, sales and channel incentive, customer loyalty, rewards, communications, events, and performance-improvement programs around the world, the announcement notes.

That creates the potential for direct operating synergies between WorkTango’s software, employee-listening capabilities, recognition technology, artificial intelligence development, and mid-market customer base and BI WORLDWIDE’s behavioral science, program design, fulfillment, communications, and global infrastructure.

The current WorkTango business was formed after Vista Equity Partners-backed Kazoo acquired the original WorkTango employee-listening company in 2022. The combined company subsequently adopted the WorkTango name and brought together recognition and rewards, employee surveys, goals, feedback, and performance-management capabilities.

The latest transaction therefore represents a transition from private equity ownership to an established operating company with closely related capabilities and customers. That could signal growing recognition among strategic industry buyers that employee recognition and engagement technology can create value as part of a broader performance, loyalty, and workplace strategy—not simply as a stand-alone software investment.

Financial terms of the transaction were not included in the announcement.
