IRF 2022 Pulse Survey Finds Big Shift to Domestic US Locations

The year began with a lot of optimism in the world of motivational events. Since then, over half of respondents to this Incentive Research Foundation pulse survey of 180 corporate end-users, meeting planners and third-party incentive providers have made destination changes for nearer-term programs.

Over 86 percent of respondents to Incentive Research Foundation’s February 2022 pulse survey are planning incentive travel programs in 2022, but flexibility is key, according to responses from 180 end-users and incentive travel suppliers. “As disruptions from Covid variants continue, health and safety protocols and considerations are still major factors in decision-making and travel planning,” the report states. “When it comes to program dates and locations, there are high rates of change in response to Covid variants and travel restrictions.”

Over half of respondents made some sort of program change since the first of the year. Of those that changed locations, 80% moved from international to domestic destinations. The study finds that most who were changing were looking for a near-term shift through the second quarter. About a third say they have experienced budget increases for hotels, health and safety costs, and air fares.

Only 20 percent of respondents say attendees would travel less by air if vaccines were required; in fact, 43 percent say they would be more likely to travel by air, and 37 percent say it wouldn’t make a difference.

According to respondents, leadership approval remains the No. 1 factor determining if a program will move forward. Attendee sentiment and health and safety policies are a combined close second.
