Research From the IRF Highlights the Psychology of Points Programs

The Incentive Research Foundation conducted employee surveys, literature reviews, and interviews with managers at companies that use points programs and found that respondents that work for organizations that use a points reward program (versus no points program) value the program even more than the awards.

This study combining multiple research methods about points program identified the key benefits of points programs to be:

Higher intrinsic motivation
Higher organizational identification
Higher employee engagement
Greater satisfaction with their rewards and recognition
Greater preference for working for an organization with a points reward program

From the literature review and expert interviews, the study finds that employees appear to care more about the recognition, appreciation, and belonging associated with receiving points rewards than what the points are redeemed for.
